Quote 3

Viola: "I am the man" (II.ii.25).

Viola is confessing that she is the man that Olivia wants, because she fell in love with the disguise that she has been wearing. Viola says that if Olivia loves her, than she might as well be dreaming because Viola is not really a man. Viola states that both her love for Orsino is hopeless because she is pretending to be a man, and Olivia's love for her is hopeless also because she is pretending to be a man.

  1. This is a plot summary, yes? While this is useful for you in terms that it helps you rehearse the play, it isn't actually enough. What you must do now that you have carefully worked out what is happening is respond to the quote and react to what Viola (and perhaps Olivia -- not you -- Shakespeare's lady!) might be feeling or thinking. I'm pretty sure that this revelation for Viola is a bit freaky, yes? Write about that.
